Cold Weather Mat Program
The TriCity Cold Weather Mat Program:
The CWWMP (cold wet weather mat program) program was initiated by the Hope for Freedom Society with some involvement from the TriCities Homeless task force about 10 years ago. Churches in the area took a month at a time to host the nightly/daily program. It operated during the fall and winter months until the permanent shelter (Opened in Dec. 2015 and operated by RainCity) was built and opened at 3030 Gordon.
Hope for Freedom has been approached by some level of government to restart the CWWMP in the churches. This program provides overnight shelter for up to 30 homeless people from our area in a safe, drug free, warm place to sleep, not to mention hot nourishing meals. A very important part of the program is the opportunity it gives for the outreach workers and staff – some who have been addicts and homeless themselves in the past – to connect with and encourage the clients to use resources and change their living conditions. In the past a good number of people decided to go into treatment or found their own homes or a job. From these results, this program was highly successful and changed the lives of these people and the community.
The clients are screened and picked up at muster points by staff from Hope for Freedom and brought to the church around 9:30/9:45pm . They select their mat on the floor, can wash up, have a nourishing hot meal and settle in for the night. In the morning they get roused around 6am, have breakfast, are given a bagged lunch and are picked up at 7am and delivered back to the muster points. The program runs 7 days a week. Aside from the staff from Hope for Freedom who are in attendance and stay overnight, the program is run by volunteers.
We see this as a fantastic opportunity to show the love of God to those in need within our community, so TriCity church will be partnering with Eagle Ridge Bible Fellowship for the month of October 2018. ERBF will be hosting the program and TriCity Church will be sending volunteers to help cover the shifts.
Breakfast shift // 5:30am – 7:30am
Dinner Shift // 8pm – 10:30pm.
